There are different types of literature reviews that you could be asked to do as part of an assessment, so it's useful to understand the different purposes to be able to understand exactly what it is you are being asked to do. Some of the terminology has become mixed in recent years, so it's important to check the specific requirements of an assessment.
Literature review - a review of the existing literature on a topic to give background on an empirical piece of research it is introducing, typically a chapter or section at the start of a dissertation or thesis.
Critical literature review - a review of the existing literature on a topic which is then critically analysed to discuss a topic or question for the author to present their own assessment. It is good practice to be systematic in performing the keyword searching to source the literature for discussion.
Systematic review - a specific type of literature review and desk based research method using a structured approach or framework eg. PRISMA, to search the literature and answer a specific research question.
