Reflective Writing

If you’re studying a course like social work, teaching or nursing you’re certainly going to have to do some reflective writing. Indeed, refection on practice and reflective writing are important skills in many subjects taught at university. Reflection requires students to learn new writing techniques and reflective writing can be hard to master, even for quite experienced academic writers.

Reflective writing is not so much about what you did, but about what you learned as a result. It requires you to apply the theory you learn in the classroom and through your own research to real world experiences (for example, on placement or teaching practice) to demonstrate your growth and development as a practitioner in your academic discipline. It may require you to adopt a model of reflection and often has a different structure and approach from a typical academic essay.

The Study Skills team offers a workshop on Reflective Writing and is always happy to discuss techniques of reflection with students and read reflective work to offer advice on its effectiveness and critical analysis. You can make an appointment to do this using the application form link on the home page of this site. We are here to help you acquire this new skill and demonstrate your learning.

There are many models which can help you with your reflective writing. Look through the document below to explore some of the models of reflective writing to see if they can help you.
