The five steps of library research

Library research steps

These questions will help you to start to work through the process of research for yourself.

  • What am I looking for?
  • How do I explain my topic?
  • Where do I look and what do I look for?
  • Can I trust the information/resources I have found?
  • Who should I credit for the ideas I’ve found?

Evaluating resources

How do I know if I can trust this resource?

Who? – who produced the resource? What expertise do they have? Have they referenced other sources?
What? – what sort of information does the resource contain? Journalism, opinion, theory, research, personal testimony?  Do other sources agree with the resource’s conclusions?
When? – when was the resource produced? Is it recent, is it out of date?
Where? – where did you find the resource? Was it recommended?  Has it been published? Has it gone through a quality control process?
Why? – why was the resource produced? Does it provide balanced information?  Does it aim to persuade through evidence or to manipulate your feelings?
