The EU AI Act

The EU AI Act entered into Force on 1st August 2024, but full applicability of the Act is scheduled for 2nd August 2027 (no exceptions). Before then, on 2nd August 2025, 'Governance rules, GPAI model obligations, and some penalty provisions become applicable.' These regulations and obligations could be far reaching for organisations globally'. Followed then by the key date 2nd August 2026 for compliance of high-risk AI.

As one example, McAlpine (2025) from the Morning Star highlights in his report that the Bank of England and Financial Conduct Authority conducted a survey that states some '75% of UK Financial services firms are already using AI and a further 10% more plan to adopt it in the next 3 years'. This is more than typical of other industries -'AI is everywhere' and could impact on those with dealings in/with the EU.

Compliance by organisations is of vital importance if fines for non-compliance of regulations/obligations are up to 7% of the organisations annual global turnover.
